Some Chinese, have the customs of giving money in red packets to those relatives and friends who are not yet married during the Chinese New Year which normally falls on February every year. Sometimes, they also give the red packets to subordinates at work. It is a tradition that is passed from one generation to another. So the New Year can be a very expensive affair as they can spend up to few hundred bucks just for the red packets money alone. The normal rate in CHina starts at 2 dollars for friends and 5 dollars for relatives.
